Retrieval practice is a type of formative assessment in which practice quizzes that do not count for a grade are utilized as a way to learn. In the following complex graphic, practice quizzes termed "Quizlets" were used in an upper division face-to-face Cell Biology courses to demonstrate their effect on student grades on lecture exams over one semester. Results indicate that students who do Quizlets more got higher grades on average than students who did them less or not at all.

Line Graph Example

The graph below shows the strong correlation of proctored lecture exam scores with average Quizlet scores (practice quizzes) in a Developmental Biology course. R-squared scores above 0.5 indicate correlation so the 0.95 R-squared value for this first lecture exam shows a strong correlation between Quizlet scores and lecture exam 1 scores.
